Reflective Blogging Assignment Topic 5 (Done by Zilu)

5) Based on your answers to the questions above, how do you wish to grow/change as a student/person for second semester? What steps do you have to take to achieve that growth?
Form my experience in my secondary one, I knew that how much you paid in study, how much you will get in your results. I will continue work hard, even though I knew it is a bramble road to walk. Until now, English is the biggest problem for me so I will pay more attention in my English language study. In the new study setting, I will try my best to accommodate it. Asking questions is my good way to study so I will continue it. If any challenging comes towards me, I will win over it. As a teenager, I will have the interest in playing but I will continence myself. I will finish my homework in high efficiency and high production. I knew literature in next year will be very difficult for me but I will pay more efforts in it. I hope I can get better results in next year.

4) Think back to a time over the past semester when you faced a challenge or made a big mistake. ( A bad grade on something, letting your benchmarks pile up until the last minute ,etc) What sorts of lessons did you learn about yourself from that challenge and/ or mistake? How did this influence the way you did things after that moment? IN what ways does this experience help you to plan for the next semester?
In the past semester, the biggest challenge for me was English. As a foreigner, I just had known a little English when I came to Singapore. I even could not read a simple story at first, that would show how poor was my English. That made me anxious seat. At that time, I really did not know what to do. I felt helpless but with the teacher’s help. I began study English as far as possible. I would catch a classmate and speak English to them. At first, I even did not understand what they were talking about. It was very hard for me to communicate with them. I felt very confusing at that time but my friends encouraged me a lot and they helped me to catch my English. After that I could talk to my friends very fluent. Then my mistakes in oral were getting less and less.
From that experience, I knew that if I had any challenge, I must work hard and get other’s help. For the next semester, I will continue improve my English in these ways.

3).What are your thoughts about having to do projects in every subject? In what ways are project-type assessments more difficult, interesting, challenging, or meaningful than traditional ways of showing what you know? Cite an example or two to support your answer.
In this semester, I had done a lot of projects. The first word comes to my brain is “team work”. This is very important to do any project. I love to do projects because I felt it was very interesting and exciting. Just in one project, there will be lots of things for you to do.
I think the project did online and had clear job for every members was more meaningful because every members must do something, no one could escape and it would help everyone to finish the project faster and better.
The English project we did in June impressed me a lot. It was a new way to do project. In the group, there would be five different members to do five different jobs. The purpose was to understand “Island of the blue dolphins”. My job was discussion director. I would ask any question I had for my group members to answer. From my questions, they would find more deep into to the story and understand it very intensive. Plus the individual work together, our project was finished, we can get other important information from other members’ work, so that individual person can get five persons’ knowledge. We were not just study for ourselves, we also helped other members. It really improve me a lot.

(2) Describe one goal that you set for yourself in September. What steps have you taken? Where and how have you met that goal? Where and how have you fallen short? And how will you proceed toward that goal in the second semester?
The goal that I set for myself in September was to get good results in CA2.I was very glad that all my results were A1s and A2s. Someone even did not believe that I got A2 in English, only myself knows how much effort I paid.
I did the exercise every day. When I had problems, I would go and ask my English teacher—Mrs Quah. She was really a good teacher, she would answer any question that I asked and did not be tired of me, so that I could improve my English as far as possible.
When my friends were eating or playing, I was reading English story book. It was because I never played , I could have these kind of good result in CA2. At night I always studied until 11 o’clock, so I could read more and more.
Sometimes I really felt tied and I wanted to play with my friends but my consciousness told me that if I got a good result, my family and I would be very happy and it was very worthy. When my friends asked me to go out with them, I often said “I have a lot of books to read and many assignments to do.” When I refused my friends, they always understood me. That made me very reassurance.
Although it was very hard to meet that goal, I knew I had already got what I paid. I will continue study like this because I succeeded.

1) What talents (new or hidden) have you learned/discoveredabout yourself this semester?I have discovered that I am very suit for the team work. I have never done any project before my secondary school life in Singapore, but when I started to do it, I realized that I have the talent of doing team work.

I was not the leader in my group every times but I am the central member in my group. I can distribute the right works to the right members so that everybody can do their suitable works. They were very glad to do that and they could do it well.
In the other hand I always have some very newfangled ideas for my group. When I said my idea to my members, they were very surprised about that. After a moment, they said it was a good idea.
Whenever my group members had problems, they would ask me because I can always solve their problems.
I always encourage my group members and they would listen, then they could do very hard for our project so our group always had high efficiency and high production.

5) Based on your answers to the questions above, how do you wish to grow/change as a student/person second semester? What steps do you have to take to achieve that growth?

Before answering the questions, I have thought of my future. Now after answering the questions, my views are better of where to go and what to do. I wish to grow to a better student who has time to revise, pay attention at all times and doing my homework whenever I can. I would also try to ask my friends or teachers of what I don’t know. I would like summarise what the teacher teaches me every day. Like this, I will understand more from what the teacher says. From today onwards, I will do my homework and revise my work first before doing anything. I will look at my mistakes and improve them. I will like to face challenges like teacher give out maths questions and time us who will do the questions fastest. From a lazy student, I wish to grow to a hardworking student to achieve better subjects in Sec 3.

How did this influence the way you did things after that moment? In what ways does this experience help you to plan for next semester?

My science examination is the last examination of SA2. The night before the examination, I was busy packing my bag for my trip to Genting. I revised my textbooks, workbooks and notes at night and I almost studied to mid-night. On the day of examination, I was doing the science questions. Then I found out that my mind was blank. Everything I studied yesterday was gone. I had to base on my daily homework and revision to do the question. And i have been constantly thinking of what to play when get there.

The biggest mistake is I don’t have time to do my revision. I had been getting home late because I got my busy CCA and doing homework late every day. At night, I did my homework with my half-eyelid is closed. After I done my homework, I doze off to sleep before I managed to revise my work and what teacher taught me.

3) What are your thoughts about having to do projects in every subject? In what ways are project-type assessments more difficult, interesting, challenging, or meaningful than traditional ways of showing what you know? Cite an example or two to support you answer.

I think that doing projects in every subject is difficult. It can be interesting and challenging too. It can also help us improve our friendship. This is how teamwork is formed. In order to do project in every subject, we need to understand the subject. Project-type assessment can present what we know in a group rather than a person showing what he/she knows to a class. In a group, we can discuss what, when and who are going to present the project together.

The first example that comes to my mind is in the June holidays, we got the guppy project. The guppy project involves Science, Maths and the IT lessons that we need for the graphs. We need to form ourselves into groups of five. We need to think who will go to measure the mass, who will present the project, how to present to project. We give different ideas to make our project more interesting. Like: What colour suit the background of the presentation better, how to make it more beautiful.

2) Describe one goal that you set for yourself in September. What steps have you taken? Where and how have you met that goal? Where and how have you fallen short? And how will you proceed toward that goal in the second semester?

I remembered that my goal in September is to achieve all subjects in SA2 a “B” grade. At that time I didn’t think much, a “B” grade is enough for me. I have been doing my homework and paying attention every day. The problem is when I have questions to ask, I don’t have time to find that teacher and ask she. I have CCA and I go reach home very late. This makes me don’t have much time revising my work. That time, I only think that doing homework and paying attention is enough for the examinations. The day before SA2 I was revising the textbooks, workbooks and the notes, teacher gave to us. The day on examination, I was like yawning the whole exam, trying not to fall asleep.

After receiving the result slip, I knew where went wrong. Instead of getting “B” grade, I took a “C” grade. I will try to do revise my work after I done my homework and do homework first before playing the computer or sitting down on the sofa and watch television.

1) What talents (new or hidden) have you learned/discovered about this semester?

Before going to secondary school, I am just a normal girl who knows how to cook instant noodles. When I heard that there is a subject called F&N, I got shocked. After going to the class for several lessons I learnt how to cook simple dishes. Although the subject is seemed to be easy, it is hard to cook a meal for a person to eat. F&N also let me learnt that what is protein, nutrients and more. The F&N course work is hard because we need to plot what and how to cook, what ingredients are needed, how many cutleries I need to take and more. F&N is also about cleanliness. Before we can get into the kitchen to cook, our fringe must be inside the hat, no long fingernails and personal hygiene is very important. Now I am more interested to cooking instead of the whole subject of F&N.
